I have been looking for a decent scanner for a long time. I wanted to be able to purchase a professional model without having to pay all of my life savings to get it. This scanner is much better than the average one that you’ll see at the store. It has tons of features, but the price is still very reasonable. I also did not want to have to read a book to know how to run diagnostics. But it is very simply to use. Here is my review for the Equus 3140 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner.
What you should look for when buying a diagnostic scanner.
I’ve worked long enough in the field to know exactly what I wanted. I sort of put together my own list of the features that I feel are important. Here they are:
- Live Data
- Retrieve diagnostic codes for OBD1 and OBD2 vehicles
- Communicate effectively with all other OBD 2 protocols
- Display data in a freeze frame format
- LED display
To spend the money on a sophisticated tool like this means that I really want to be able to use it to make my job a little bit easier. I do not want to wrestle with my equipment, plain and simple. Read on to see why each of these features are important.
Is it programmed to provide live data?
Yes. The Equus 3140 has a special live viewing that is simple and does not require searching through several menus. Instead it ahs single-button access so that you can get to the needed information quickly and efficiently.
Will the unit retrieve diagnostic codes from OBD 1 and 2 vehicles?
The Equus 3140 links to Genertal motors vehicles that were manufactured from 1982 to 1993 and a few ’94-’95 models. Those Ford vehicles manufactured from ’83 to ’95 which have EEC-IV systems are also compatible. The Toyota Lexus made from 1991 to 1995 and Chrysler models made from 1984 to 1995 are compatible as are Jeeps manufactured from ’93 to ’95.
Can I use it to communicate with other OBD protocols?
The Equus 3140 links to every OBD II protocols. This includes the Controller Area Network.
Can I freeze frame the data display?
This is a great feature in my opinion. You can freeze the screen so that you can easily keep the information being displayed in front of you for easy access.
I need to be able to read the display, is it an LED display?
This unit contains a LCD display that is backlit so you can read it in circumstances where there is not sufficient lighting.
How much should you expect to pay for this device?
These devices can run you as much as $477 on some sites. However, you really should not pay more than $200 for any such equipment. Right now, Amazon has it listed for just $183.54. This is a great price for this piece of equipment.

Have there been any complaints?
I didn’t see any complaints in the reviews I read before purchasing this product. Some said the buttons were slightly confusing, but they were okay as soon as you figured them out. The user’s manual should help clear up any confusion.
